Boring Nicknames: Remember those cute nicknames for Metro Rail’s tunneling machines? Well, forget it, say the subway people. Perhaps the names aren’t all that funny after a giant digging machine became stuck in the Santa Monica Mountains over the summer. . . . Mimicking a phrase normally associated with descriptions of the rock star Prince, the spokesmen now tell reporters of the progress of “tunnel boring machines Nos. 1 and 2, formerly known as Thelma and Louise.”

Moving In: Aerospace is out. Mortgage banking is in. . . . Countrywide Credit Industries Inc. of Pasadena closed escrow Thursday on the former Lockheed corporate headquarters in Calabasas. Countrywide says its payroll grew by 35% last year; about 750 Countrywide workers will move to the Calabasas site, said spokeswoman Jumana Totry.

Class Notes: Smaller sometimes winds up bigger. . . . First-time teacher Jana Doros, above, spent her first day Thursday teaching first-graders at Reseda Elementary School. And instead of 20 6-year-olds, she had 40 (B1). She asked the kids: “Was anybody scared last night? No one? I was scared.”
