Bigger Bucks

Ventura County stands to receive an additional $2.2 million from the state to add to its law enforcement coffers (B5). . . Dist. Atty. Michael Bradbury plans to use his share to try murderers. “We’re experiencing more murder cases and capital cases then I can remember ever seeing in this office,” he said. “We’re spending a small fortune on these cases.”

Go Fish

The fishing tournament that begins today at Channel Islands Harbor is billed as the Broadbill Invitational, but there’s one problem: No one has reeled in a broadbill swordfish since 1978 (C11). Instead, marlin have been the unlucky catches. . . . But even if the guests of honor haven’t been seen, they are still the subject of fish stories: “Marlin are tough, but the broadbill is the ultimate difficult fish to catch,” one angler says. “No matter what, you really get pumped up when you have it on the line.”

Soccer Kickoff
