It’s as predictable as death and taxes: Whenever USC loses a football game, all manner of Gumpsters come forth spewing their wisdom as to why USC lost [Viewpoint, Aug. 31]. These same bright minds will be strangely silent the night of Jan. 1, after another USC victory in the Rose Bowl.

I can understand the couple of grumpy Bruin fans still suffering from recent Rose and Aloha Bowl hangovers writing in to gloat, but it is inexcusable for Trojan fans to bash a team and coaching staff that have recently won more games than any other Pac-10 team, and who have won the Cotton Bowl and Rose Bowl the last two seasons.

After USC’s impressive showing against Penn State, one thing becomes painfully obvious. None of the Trojan lads will have to worry about playing Sunday football for the rest of their lives.
