Two young women who vanished on a vacation trip last year were buried Saturday as people across Belgium mourned for the victims of a deadly child-pornography ring.

About 3,000 people, many carrying candles and white balloons, attended separate funerals for Eefje Lambrecks and An Marchal.

The services, held at a neighborhood church and at the main cathedral in this provincial capital in eastern Belgium, were broadcast live on national television.

Lambrecks, 19, and Marchal, 17, disappeared from the North Sea resort of Ostend in August 1995. Police discovered their bodies Tuesday buried near a house owned by convicted child-rapist Marc Dutroux.

Dutroux, 38, is the chief suspect in a child-pornography case that has outraged Belgians and prompted calls for changes in the country’s judicial system. Some have demanded restoration of the death penalty.
