Gunmen Fire on Turkish Sentries; 1 Killed, 1 Hurt

Gunmen from the Greek Cypriot side of this divided island opened fire on Turkish Cypriot sentries near Famagusta, killing one and wounding another, Turkish Cypriot officials said. Rauf R. Denktash, president of the breakaway republic on the Turkish Cypriot north side of the island, called the shooting an act of revenge for the deaths of two Greek Cypriots killed by Turks or Turkish Cypriots last month. Government spokesman Yannakis Cassoulides denied involvement by Greek Cypriot forces.
