Rebels Tighten Grip on Strategic City

The rebel Taliban Islamic militia tightened its grip on the strategic eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad, sending thousands of refugees across the border into Pakistan. But beleaguered President Burhanuddin Rabbani, in a speech in the capital, Kabul, vowed to battle it out, calling the Taliban fighters “enemies of Afghanistan.” Government jets struck back at the Taliban, bombing Jalalabad’s airport, relief agency officials said. But most of the city was quiet.
