Red Cross Volunteer to Help Out in N.C.

Veteran Red Cross volunteer Mike Goth of Ventura is on the road again--this time to North Carolina to help the relief effort there after the destruction caused by Hurricane Fran.

Goth, who left earlier this week on his 12th national assignment, joins 1,864 other Red Cross employees and volunteers nationwide who are assisting the hurricane-pummeled East Coast.

The Red Cross has set up nearly 400 shelters from North Carolina to Virginia to provide temporary housing for 31,000 people, according to Richard Rink, director of disaster services at the Red Cross offices in Ventura.

Goth, a Red Cross volunteer for nearly 20 years, will manage a disaster relief service center in Colfax, N.C. The centers help locate lodging, food and clothing for those whose homes and lives were devastated by the storm.

Rink says Ventura, which has 30 people who are qualified to respond to national disasters, has a large and committed pool of volunteers.

“We have had a lot of our own disasters, which has provided us with a lot of experience,” he said.
