Locklin, Nyssen Help the Oilers Shut Out Downey

An overpowering Huntington Beach defense and 100-plus yard rushing performance by Jason Locklin earned Coach Mike Dodd’s first victory as the Oilers defeated Downey, 17-0.

The Oilers defense led by Adam Nyssen, who had two of his team’s four sacks, held the Vikings to 57 yards in total offense and only two first downs.

Offensively, Huntington Beach was lead by Locklin, who rushed for 107 yards in 19 carries and one touchdown. Locklin’s longest run was a 19-yarder, which set up Huntington Beach’s first score, a 37-yard field goal by Brent Chancellor.

Quarterback Dave Van Hoorebeke was eight of 18 for 125 yards, including a 29-yard completion to Damon Van Hoorebeke late in the third quarter.

The play set up Eric Yang’s two-yard touchdown run.

“We came out and played very well defensively,” Dodd said. “I don’t think we allowed a first down until late in the game. Our defense did a great job for us tonight.”

“I’m excited. We are back on track after having problems with our program. I’m also proud of my offensive line because they’re young. They made it possible for Locklin to run early.”
