Mandela Has Knee Surgery
Associated Press
PRETORIA, South Africa —
President Nelson Mandela had successful arthroscopic surgery performed on his right knee and was expected to resume normal duties in a few days, Surgeon General D. P. Knodel said Sunday.
Knodel said Mandela, 78, was discharged Sunday.
A spokesman said the knee operation repaired damage incurred during the 27 years that Mandela was in prison for trying to overthrow the white government.
He was released from prison in 1990.
