GOP Offers to Boost Education Funding

Senate Republicans, thrown on the defensive by Democrats pushing for an election-year boost in education spending, said they are willing to add $2.3 billion to the Education Department budget for the coming year. Democrats and President Clinton have said that they want $3.1 billion added. The proposal signals how much Republicans may be willing to concede to Clinton on one of his top domestic policy priorities.
