Gag Order Now Covers Simpson Custody Battle

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The commissioner hearing the O.J. Simpson custody case imposed a gag order Wednesday on lawyers, witnesses and everyone else who walks through his doors in these hearings, attorneys said.

Attorney Saul Gelbart, who is representing Louis and Juditha Brown, said no one in the courtroom objected to Commissioner Thomas H. Schulte’s order.

“Hopefully, this will cause the media to back off,” Gelbart said.

Attorneys said the order was in response to recent print and television stories about the custody case, despite a self-imposed gag order by attorneys for both sides and other participants.

The children, Sydney, 10 and Justin, 8, have been living with the Browns, their maternal grandparents, in Dana Point since their father was arrested in June 1994 on suspicion of killing their mother and one of her friends.

Simpson was found not guilty of the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Lyle Goldman in October 1995.

Simpson has asked for custody of the children, but the Browns have refused, causing the Betty Lou Lamoreaux Justice Center hearings, which have stretched for weeks.
