Over the Hill and Into Adventure

The “Over the Hill Gang,” now in its 20th year, started out as a club for seniors who enjoy skiing. Now the OTHG has grown to include golfing, biking, hiking and rafting trips to destinations in Europe, Canada and the United States.

The following is a sampling of trips that will be available in 1997. Except where noted, prices are per person on a double-occupancy basis and include local transportation and baggage handling. Air transportation between destinations in the U.S. and Canada is not included. Prices for trips to foreign countries include air fare.

* Utah Sampler (Jan. 3 to 10): Participants headquarter at the downtown Salt Lake City Marriott, and a daily van takes them from their lodging to ski resorts at Alta, Brighton, Deer Valley, Park City, Snowbird and Solitude. The trip includes seven nights’ lodging, lift tickets for six days, guides and instructors, welcome buffet party, one lunch and two dinners. Prices: over age 70, $992; under 70, $1,095.

* Val-d’Isere, France (March 31 to April 9): More than 100 ski lifts on 24,000 acres of Alpine slopes give participants a lot of variety and scenery. The package includes breakfast and dinner daily, lift tickets for six days with instructors and guides, ground transportation and baggage handling. Seven nights are spent at the four-star Hotel Latitudes and one night at the four-star Hotel Mirabeau. Price: $2,649 including round-trip air fare from Washington, D.C.

Biking Hawaii (April 12 to 18): Cycle past coffee plantations, macadamia nut orchards and black sand beaches. Snorkeling, with equipment provided, is available. This biking trip is rated moderate to challenging. Two nights each are spent in three hotels and the tour includes all meals, except dinner on departure day, a 21-speed bicycle, support wagon, all taxes and meal gratuities. Price: $1,895.

* Rafting the Grand Canyon (June 13 to 22): First and last nights are spent in Las Vegas and one night in Flagstaff, Ariz. All equipment for rafting and camping and all meals on the river are included. A charter bus to the Colorado River is provided. Price: $1,995.

* Hiking the Olympic Peninsula (Sept. 13 to 20): The trip begins and ends in Seattle, with overnights at inns and resorts near Olympic National Park. Van service takes guests to trail heads each morning to hike the Hoh Rain Forest. Guests also take a ferry boat to Victoria, British Columbia, for an overnight visit. Includes five nights in B&Bs;, two nights at a hotel in Seattle, hiking guide, OTHG host, most meals and ground transportation. Price $1,799.
