O.C. Players Lose in Opening Round

Orange County badminton players lost in the opening round of the men’s and women’s singles competition Tuesday in the U.S. Open Badminton Tournament at the Orange County Badminton Club.

Shannon Hsu of Costa Mesa fell to Debra O’Connor of Trinidad, 11-2, 11-0, and Hoang Ly of Orange lost, 15-2, 15-1, to Thomas Stuer-Lauridsen of Denmark. Top Malaysian player Pang Chen beat Quyen Nguyen of Aliso Viejo, 15-4, 15-0, and Djeelee Rantung of Lake Forest lost to Suriname’s Oscar Brandon, 15-6, 15-3.

Hsu, Ly, Nguyen and Rantung will begin competition today in women’s and mixed doubles competitions, which starts at 4:44 p.m.
