The Controversial Tunnel

Share

Excavation on the tunnel began 12 years ago. The completion of the project early Tuesday sparked riots among Palestinians.

The tunnel exits at the Second Station of the Cross. According to tradition, Jesus took up the cross here.

The tunnel: The first 200 yards consist of medieval and Roman halls on various levels. That is followed by a 300-yard-long tunnel built by the Hasmoneans about 2,200 years ago to channel water to the Temple Mount. At the end of the water tunnel, a few steps lead to the Via Dolorosa, the route Jesus is said to have taken to his crucifixion.

Dome of the Rock: The rock is believed to be the place where Abraham was to sacrifice his son Isaac and where Muhammad ascended to heaven.

Western Wall: The holiest shrine of Judaism. Limestone blocks of the first five levels were part of Herod’s Temple; stones from the Roman and Muslim eras were placed on top.
