Microsoft to Let Panel Review Internet Software: Critics have said Microsoft Corp. could have created a monopoly of the global computer network if it had been unwilling to permit an independent review of its ActiveX software technology. Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft has met with 100 companies and customers to vote on how best to create an oversight panel. The companies included Intel Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co. and Netscape Communications Corp. They voted to turn ActiveX over to the Open Group, a Cambridge, Mass.-based industry group. ActiveX is a combination of software and programming instructions that are published on the World Wide Web. It is a competitor of Sun’s Java programming.
