EXECUTIVE BLUES: Down and Out in Corporate America by G. J. Meyer (Dell: $12.95, 245 pp.). Meyer, a former officer at McDonnell Douglas, describes his struggle to find a new job in the era of corporate downsizing. He offers ominous comments about the ramifications of vanishing job security: “Peel away the uplifting rhetoric about the exciting workplace of the future and what you’re left with is an America in which stability, continuity and security--the basic elements of a coherent life--are going to be beyond the grasp of all but an increasingly small, increasingly isolated minority.”

But it’s difficult to muster much sympathy for Meyer, who recalls his six-figure salary, then wrings his hands and complains he didn’t really enjoy it.
