Florida retained a firm grip on the No. 1 ranking in both college football polls while Florida State regained the No. 2 spot from Ohio State in the USA Today/CNN coaches’ poll and nearly reclaimed the same spot from the Buckeyes in The Associated Press’ rankings.

The Gators (6-0), with a 56-13 rout of LSU, received 54 first-place votes and 1,659 points Sunday from the 67 sports writers and broadcasters who vote in the AP poll.

The No. 2 Buckeyes (5-0), who needed a fourth-quarter touchdown pass to beat Wisconsin, 17-14, had only seven first-place votes and 1,578 points this week. The third-ranked Seminoles beat Miami, 34-16, and received five first-place votes and 1,575 points.

Last week, Ohio State moved into No. 2 over Florida State, which had been second the two previous weeks. In the coaches’ poll, however, the Seminoles (seven first-place votes and 1,467 points) moved ahead of the Buckeyes (two first-place votes and 1,448 points).

Arizona State (6-0) remained at No. 4.

An autopsy on Bill Tierney, a Fordham football player who collapsed during pregame warmups and later died, was inconclusive, the New York medical examiner’s office said, adding that further tests will be necessary and those results should come back within a week.
