FBI Memo on Drug War

Share

* My opinion of the Louis J. Freeh “drug memo” to President Clinton is that it was a politically motivated cheap shot (“Drug War Disorganized, FBI Memo Says,” Oct. 6). Considering the president’s naming of Gen. Barry McCaffrey as drug czar, and his recent signing of legislation that simultaneously expanded and limited the powers of Freeh’s organization, there’s no great mystery where the director’s sympathies lie.

Then there’s Bob Dole’s hare-brained accusation, as described by your article, that “a lack of attention to the drug problem, combined with an attitude of permissiveness in the White House, has led many youths to conclude that drug use is not taboo.” This is another eleventh hour, unsubstantiated Republican ploy. Young people look to their parents for moral guidance, and certainly not to politicians.

I have been a lifelong Democrat, but will be voting Libertarian this year. Still, I can’t stomach the kind of slanderous lies being trotted out to dishonor our current president in the hopes of gleaning another useless point or two in the polls. With the Republicans’ asinine behavior over the past four years, you can bet your imaginary 15% tax cut that there will be three distinct political parties vying for the White House in the year 2000, and in 2004, there will be two once again. Guess which one will be missing?
