Tightrope artist Jay Cochrane plans to become the first person in 100 years to walk across Niagara Falls on a wire.

But unlike acrobats such as the Great Blondin who made such crossings routine a century ago by traversing about 1,100 feet across Horseshoe Falls, Cochrane said Tuesday that he plans to walk all the way from the New York side to the Ontario side, about 3,500 feet.

Last week, the mayors of cities on either side of the falls gave their approval for the feat, which is scheduled to take place in September next year.

Cochrane, who says he is in his mid-50s, walked a tightrope over the Yangtze River in 1995, a distance of 1,098 feet.
