“Now that evenings are turning cooler and my garden is about played out, I’m starting to cook more rustic dishes, things that simmer. And the fuller, more robust wines come back into play as a counterpoint to the bright, fresh roses we enjoyed all summer. One that has really impressed me recently is a 1993 Von Strasser Cabernet from the Diamond Mountain area at the north end of the Napa Valley. This is the fourth vintage from this small family producer. The ’93 is just lovely. It’s a classically styled Cabernet--round, with ripe fruit, just slightly minty--and very nice drinking now.”
