A man who showed up at lottery headquarters with a winning $5.8-million lottery ticket won’t get the prize because he missed the one-year deadline by three days.

The owner of the store where the ticket was sold said Clarence Jackson Jr., 23, told him he found the ticket after hearing about the unclaimed jackpot. Family members said Jackson’s father had bought it and hadn’t turned it in because he was ill.

Lottery chief Otho Brown said Jackson may sue, so the $5.8 million would be held in the unclaimed prize fund until a final resolution. A person who tried to collect an expired $100,000 prize in 1993 lost his lawsuit.

Another $5-million jackpot will expire at 11:59 p.m. Nov. 10 unless someone steps forward.
