Folding Chair Is Easy to Store
Most lawn chairs based on popular Adirondack designs have the twin benefits of comfort and good looks. That’s why they’re popular. Without sacrificing either one, this build-it-yourself version adds a third benefit: It folds up for easy storage.
By day, relax and enjoy the sun in style. By night--or in the off-season--store the chair in the garage or shed. Designed to be as roomy and sturdy as any stationary model, it still folds up in one simple step; just lift the rear locking rail and fold the seat back forward.
The chair is a good project for any do-it-yourselfer with a few common tools and a little free time. It is particularly easy to build because each of its 20 pieces is traced onto wood using full-size patterns, then cut, sanded, assembled and painted or stained.
Materials for this project include 35 board feet of 3-inch hardwood, one 2-by-4 of Douglas fir, one dowel, six butt hinges, wood screws, glue and finish.
The completed chair measures 37 inches tall by 24 inches wide by 39 inches long when open and 21 inches tall by 24 inches wide by 48 inches long when folded.
The folding Adirondack-style chair plan, No. 851, is $6.50 and includes step-by-step directions with 11 photos, traceable patterns, diagrams, and a shopping list and cutting schedule.
A package of plans for an entire set of Adirondack-style outdoor furniture, No. C64, is $18.95 and features a chair (No. 55), love seat (No. 805), footrest (No. 802) and table (No. 813). Individually, each plan is $6.50.
