Q: Why are yawns contagious?
A: Yawning is common in humans, animals (mammals) and even birds. According to UCLA speech pathologists, the contagious aspect of yawning is part of man’s ancient genetic history. Scientists believe that yawning and similar behaviors are linked to both vulnerability and aggression. Such behaviors are modern remnants of ancient group-based activities such as those seen among prides of lions. The roar of one lion often initiates a group response. Researchers speculate that outbreaks of yawning simply show our genetic roots.
