Harry Thomas; Makeup Artist Specialized in Horror Films

Harry Thomas, 87, Hollywood makeup artist who specialized in early horror and science fiction films. As Phyllis Coates, one of the actresses who played Lois Lane in the 1950s “Adventures of Superman” television series, told The Times in 1994: “My makeup man was Harry Thomas, who made up every monster in Hollywood.” Thomas’ films included “Missile to the Moon,” “Night of the Blood Beast,” “From Hell It Came,” “Killers From Space” and the original “Little Shop of Horrors.” Over the years, Thomas made up such diverse stars as Greta Garbo, Ronald Reagan and stripper Tempest Storm. Before studying makeup, the Florida-born makeup expert appeared in the 1930 Laurel and Hardy film “Pardon Me.” Because he had worked closely with the legendary director Ed Wood, Thomas appeared as himself in documentaries about Wood and in the 1995 film “The Haunted World of Edward D.
