Driver Runs Red Light, Kills Man

A 35-year-old Santa Ana pedestrian died Saturday night after being struck by a hit-and-run driver who ran a red light, police said Sunday.

The victim’s name was withheld pending notification of his family, Santa Ana Police Lt. Bob Chavez said.

The pedestrian was in a crosswalk at the intersection of 1st and Townsend streets at 9:16 p.m. when he was hit by a driver going west on 1st Street, Chavez said.

The driver fled without stopping, Chavez said. The victim was taken to UCI Medical Center, where he died.

David Olivarel Torres, 41, of Santa Ana, was arrested a few blocks away on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, felony hit-and-run and drunk driving, Chavez said.
