Funds OKd to Repair Pier Parking Facility

The cracks are being filled in. The holes are being patched. And though it may take a year and half, city officials say the Redondo Beach Pier parking lot will be in tiptop shape.

The City Council earlier this month allotted $2 million to fix the 25-year-old parking facility, which has been in a state of disrepair for some time because salty, moist sea air has eaten away at the structure.

The city is immediately spending up to $50,000 to make emergency repairs on cracked concrete that could pose a danger to the public, city engineer Steve Huang said. The bulk of the reconstruction will be done September 1997 to April 1998 after the summer tourist season is over.

Nearly half the parking lot money is coming from funds left over from the Galleria at South Bay redevelopment project. An additional $750,000 will come from the Pier Reconstruction Fund.
