McHenry Tichenor; Pioneer in Spanish-Language Radio

McHenry Tichenor, 98, a pioneer in Spanish-language radio programming. After owning small newspapers, the founder of Tichenor Media System branched into radio and later television. In 1949, he introduced a Spanish-language radio station, KGBS, in his hometown of Harlingen, Texas, which served as a forerunner for other media companies. A second Texas station purchased by Tichenor, KSOX, split its programming between English and Spanish. As Tichenor added radio stations, he and his sons eventually decided to broadcast solely in Spanish. In addition to several Texas stations, Tichenor owned radio stations in Chicago and New York. Earlier this year, his family-run company purchased KSOL-FM and KYLZ-FM in the San Francisco Bay Area. On Thursday in Harlingen.
