Ailing Dissident Freed From Prison
From Times Wire Reports
China released dissident Chen Ziming, who has cancer, from prison in an apparent bid to appease the United States two weeks before a visit by Secretary of State Warren Christopher. The release of Chen, 44, an organizer of the 1989 pro-democracy demonstrations in Tiananmen Square, follows the sentencing of another dissident, Wang Dan, last week to an 11-year prison term. Chen’s family had appealed for his release so he could seek treatment for cancer and other ailments.
