Pope’s Cuba Visit

Share

* Regarding the pope’s upcoming visit to Cuba, Oct. 30:

I thank the Catholic Church’s wisdom for keeping diplomatic ties with Castro’s Cuba.

Wishing Fidel Castro away is not going to do it. The majority of the Cuban population is against change as a byproduct of violence. We remember the bloodshed that engulfed the country while trying to oust former Cuban dictators Machado and Batista.

The leadership of Cuban exiles in the Miami community would do well in toning down their anti-Castro rhetoric. The Helms-Burton law is impossible to enforce because U.S. interests are not favored by using unilateral economic sanctions against their European trade customers.

Insults and plain demagoguery should give way to mature political thinking.
