An 18-year-old college student surrendered to authorities Thursday on charges he helped his girlfriend murder her newborn son.

A frightened-looking Brian Peterson Jr., accompanied by his lawyer and mother, waded through a crush of media and turned himself in to the FBI on a fugitive warrant. He was transferred to police in Newark, Del., for processing on first-degree murder charges. A judge later ordered him held without bail.

Amy Grossberg, also 18, surrendered Monday and was charged in the infant’s death. She also was being held without bail. Both could face the death penalty if convicted.

Police say the onetime high school sweethearts murdered the baby boy after Grossberg gave birth last week in a motel room in Delaware. They are accused of hitting the baby in the head and stuffing him into a plastic bag, which they dumped in a trash can before dawn Nov. 12.

The body was found the next day. An autopsy showed the baby died of severe skull fractures. The motel was a few miles from the University of Delaware, where Grossberg is a freshman. Peterson, who allegedly helped with the baby’s delivery, is a freshman at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania.
