Perched in the bucket of a cherry picker, Tipper Gore placed the crowning ornament Monday on the National Christmas Tree.

The vice president’s wife, accompanied by John Betchkal, president of Christmas Pageant of Peace Inc., was hoisted to the tip of the 40-foot Colorado blue spruce and attached a 42-inch illuminated star with four points and gold trim.

The tree, on the Ellipse behind the White House, was already partially decorated with gold garlands and hundreds of tiny lights.

President Clinton is expected to light the tree Dec. 5.
