Fighting what may be his last political battle, Shimon Peres negotiated a deal Thursday that allows him to stay on as opposition leader through the end of 1997--six months longer than permitted by the bylaws of his Labor Party.

In exchange, Peres agreed that the election of a new party chairman will be held in June, as originally planned.

The compromise was worked out between Peres and Ehud Barak, who is considered Peres’ most likely successor and Labor’s best bet for defeating Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the next national election.
