Venice, Italy, flooded last week for the 79th time this year, setting a record for this century. High tides downtown and at St. Mark’s Square forced tourists and residents to wade through foot-high water in some piazzas.

Bad weather caused almost daily flooding in November. City officials worry that the salt water will eventually damage historic buildings. In 1979, a total of 78 floods swamped low areas of the city.
