Youths Need to Know STD Risks

I was happy to see the article by Leslie Knowlton, “New Push Against STDs Is Urged” (Nov. 20). As the director of REACH LA, a youth driven HIV / AIDS prevention organization serving teenagers in South-Central, Central and East Los Angeles, I appreciate the acknowledgment of the need for more public awareness in the arena of sexual health, especially for adolescents.

REACH LA helps youths understand their own risk for AIDS through Club Prophylactive, a multimedia educational dance party that provides a comfortable environment for teenagers to learn how to protect themselves. More intensive education is provided through workshops that utilize interactive theater techniques to help youths develop better negotiation skills for risk-reducing behaviors.
