Times Staff and Wire Reports

Teamsters President Ron Carey held on to a narrowing lead as vote counting continued in the election for top officers of the 1.4-million-member union. Carey, seeking a second five-year term as the head of the Teamsters, had 85,830 votes, or 53% of the total, compared with 75,171 for challenger James P. Hoffa. Counting was completed for 211 of the 562 locals in the United States and Canada, and the margin is still too close for either side to claim victory in the fiercely fought election battle. Approximately 500,000 votes were cast, all by mail, in the election.
