War Criminals

* While a ban on the entry to the U.S. of Japanese soldiers and physicians involved in experimenting on prisoners is commendable (Dec. 4), with the same moral criteria the U.S. should also consider banning Argentine military commanders who were found guilty of genocide during the 1970s. Not only were they responsible for the torture and extrajudicial execution of thousands of their fellow countrymen, but also of American citizens.
And what about the Chileans, Salvadorans, Peruvians and Guatemalans who have been identified as perpetrators of similar atrocities? Are they judged with different standards? Torture, extrajudicial executions and “disappearances” are international crimes and there should be no borders, no time limits, in our effort to punish those responsible.
