Dzierzynski Leads SCC to Victory

Adam Dzierzynski of Southern California College made four of six free throws with less than a minute remaining to clinch an 88-82 victory over La Verne in a nonconference men’s basketball game Wednesday at SCC.

Dzierzynski led SCC (8-2) with 17 points and seven assists. Rod Scheuerman added 14 points and Terence Wilborn 13.

La Verne (3-4) was led by Paul Celaya and Chad Duggins, each of whom scored 20 points.

In women’s nonconference basketball:

Concordia 72, Lawrence 54--Concordia (8-1) took a 15-0 lead in the first five minutes and led Lawrence, 44-26, at the half on 15 of 28 (54%) shooting from the field. Senior All-American Angela Sather scored 18 of her game-high 20 points in the first half, hitting five of five from the field.

Heather Carll hit six of seven shots for 14 points and Kristin Weddick had 10 points and five assists. Angela Good led Concordia with eight rebounds.

Concordia ends Lawrence’s unbeaten streak at five games. The Vikings (5-1) were led by Molly Lieberman with 13 points.

In other nonconference games:

UC Irvine 41, Portland State 39--Despite being outscored, 21-14, in the second half, UC Irvine (3-4) held on to win. UCI’s Megan Stafford and Chelsea Mackey each had 11 points. Leticia Osegura led the Anteaters with 11 rebounds.

Southern California College 65, La Verne 51--Elaine Whittemore recorded career highs in scoring with 27 points and rebounding with 16, to lead SCC (7-2).
