Storm Leaves 106 Dead, 100 Missing
A massive search-and-rescue operation was launched to find more than 100 people still missing after a Christmas Day storm killed 106 in eastern Malaysia, officials said. They said nearly 300 rescue workers were deployed and more were expected to join the operation at the worst affected area, the logging town of Keningau in Malaysia’s Sabah state on Borneo island. Police said about 3,000 people were left homeless, and 500 houses in nine villages were washed away after Tropical Storm Greg blew ashore from the South China Sea. It was one of the worst storms to hit the region in memory.
