A memorial service will be held today for Dan Hon, an attorney and Newhall Signal columnist remembered by friends and community members for his civic involvement long before he ventured into writing.

“Dan was very active and very supportive of the community,” said Clyde Smyth, a Santa Clarita councilman who had been friends with Hon since junior high school.

Hon died Dec. 21 from complications of a liver ailment, friends said. He was 61.

He moved to the Santa Clarita Valley to practice as an attorney in 1970 and quickly became involved with a variety of causes, including the Santa Clarita Boys & Girls Club and the Newhall Rotary Club, friends said.

“Just about whatever needed to be done, Dan was there to help,” Smyth said.

Hon had written columns for the past several years on everything from childhood memories to community development, according to Ruth Newhall, former Signal owner and editor.

The 2 p.m. memorial will be held at the Elks Lodge, 17766 Sierra Highway.
