Zaire’s army has launched a counteroffensive against rebels trying to oust the government of President Mobutu Sese Seko. Rebel leader Laurent Kabila said troops attacked positions in Fizi, about 190 miles south of the eastern Zairian town of Goma, but were beaten back. Kabila said a smaller attack was repulsed in Itombwe, about 150 miles south of Goma. Government spokesman Koloni Longo confirmed that a clash had occurred but declined to give details.
