Freedom Will Buy 2 New Mexico Papers

Freedom Communications Inc. has agreed to purchase two New Mexico newspapers, the daily Portales News Tribune in Portales and the twice-weekly Quay County Sun in Tucumcari, from Houston-based Southern Newspapers Inc.

The sale price was not disclosed. Southern Newspapers said the sales should be completed in about 45 days.

Freedom, which owns the Orange County Register in Santa Ana, publishes 26 daily newspapers and 40 weeklies and specialty publications in 11 states. Most are small community papers.
