Hawthorne Mall to Get 15-Screen Theater, Food Court

Owners of the Hawthorne Plaza shopping center are gearing up for a make-over that will modernize and expand the 20-year-old mall.

During the redesign, the mall’s six-screen movie theater will be replaced by a 15-screen cinema, and a food court and third level will be added. The mall also hopes to attract a large supermarket and video store.

Mall owners Danny Bakewell and Oliver McMillan, a San Diego construction company, purchased the mall 15 months ago and have devised the renovation plan in hopes of improving sales at the shopping center.

The plaza, located on Hawthorne Boulevard, is the only mall in Hawthorne and owners hope the additions will encourage residents to spend their money in their own community.

“The community wants this and they need it,” said mall general manager Joseph Rouzan III. “We want to be able to offer services that they are driving elsewhere to obtain.”

Rouzan said renovations are scheduled to begin in the fall and are expected to take 18 months.
