ANNIVERSARY MASS: Cardinal Roger Mahony will conduct the Archdiocese Wedding Anniversary Mass--for couples marking their 25th, 50th or greater anniversaries this year--on the afternoon of Feb. 9 at St. Mel’s Catholic Church in Woodland Hills. The special Mass and reception was started 25 years ago by Msgr. Timothy O’Connell, former director of the Archdiocese’s Family Life Bureau. This year’s Wedding Anniversary Mass is completely booked, although there is a waiting list. A regional celebration scheduled for Sunday at St. Francis de Sales Church in Sherman Oaks has been canceled. To inquire about the waiting list, call (213) 637-7228.

SOCIAL JUSTICE TALK: Valley Beth Shalom, a Conservative synagogue, and Temple Kol Tikvah, a Reform congregation, will hold a joint service Friday featuring guest speaker Leonard Fein, director of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations’ Committee on Social Action. WALK FOR CHRIST: Parks Chapel AME Church will hold its second annual Walk for Christ on Feb. 8. to call attention to the church and help raise money for its activities. LECTURE SERIES: An 11-week series examining the topic “Are Jews the Chosen People?”--aimed at adults ages 22 to 39--will begin Tuesday evening at the University of Judaism. Leading the discussions will be Rabbi Daniel Gordis, vice president of public affairs and community outreach and dean of the university’s Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies, and Rabbi Chaim Seidler-Feller, director of UCLA Hillel and a UCLA sociology lecturer.

Topics of the series, which vary each week, will include Jewish perspectives on spirituality, sexuality, homosexuality, Jewish-American relations with Israel, faith in the wake of the Holocaust and the future of liberal Judaism. SPIRITUAL JOURNEY: Patrick Mitchell, professor of philosophy and theology at St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo, and his wife, Mary Rose Betten Mitchell, a professional actress and comedian, will discuss their spiritual journey at a Catholic community luncheon Wednesday in Toluca Lake. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: Lynn Moriarty, director of the Family Violence Project of Jewish Family Service, will discuss “Domestic Violence in Jewish Families” on Wednesday as part of Adat Ari El Sisterhood’s Multi-Interest Day program.
