Three-Strikes Case

Share

Superior Court Judge Donald Pitts missed the point in reducing the sentence of Jerry Dewayne Williams for stealing a piece of pizza (Jan. 29). The pizza wasn’t why this man was given such a harsh sentence. I believe the average citizen wants people like this put away for long jail terms.

Pitts is a good case study of why judges should not be allowed to use their own discretion in cases like this and should be forced to follow the guidelines voted in by the citizens of California. In this case and all similar cases it should be three strikes and you’re out. It shouldn’t take a violent crime to put people like Williams away and keep the streets safe. Pizza, even a piece, has nothing to do with the judge’s disrespect of the will of the people.
