Veteran Outdoorsman and Editor Lupi Saldana Dies in Whittier at 80
Lupi Saldana, outdoors editor for three Los Angeles newspapers in a sportswriting career that spanned 40 years, died Wednesday in Whittier after suffering a stroke Monday.
Saldana, 80, became outdoors editor of the old Daily News in the 1940s. When it closed in 1955, he joined the Mirror-News and when it was closed in 1962, he moved to The Times, where he worked until his retirement.
Before becoming an outdoors writer, Saldana covered the Los Angeles Angels and Hollywood Stars baseball teams in the Pacific Coast League for the Daily News. An avid golfer, he was a member of Los Coyotes Country Club and for many years was chairman of the Billy Casper charity tournament.
Survivors include sons Don of Whittier and Ron of Yorba Linda, four grandchildren and one great grandchild. His wife of 57 years, Kay, died last July.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 15265 Mulberry Dr., Whittier.
