The way Devil goalie Martin Brodeur was playing, the Florida Panthers knew they might need a couple of breaks at New Jersey.

Johan Garpenlov provided them, once with a swipe of his own stick and one with a shot off the stick of Brodeur’s teammate.

Garpenlov’s two goals in a 3:40 span early in the third period rallied the Panthers to a 2-2 tie with the Devils on Friday night.

The tying goal came when Garpenlov’s shot from the top of the left circle appeared to hit off the stick of defenseman Shawn Chambers and beat Brodeur inside the goal post.

“It’s two points we should have had tonight. They played last night. They should have been tired and we should have outworked them. In my eyes, we blew it,” New Jersey’s Bill Guerin said.

Calgary 5, Washington 2--Robert Reichel scored his first goal in 13 games and Jarome Iginla had three assists for the Flames at Calgary.

It was only the 10th goal of the season for Reichel, who only three seasons ago was in the midst of his second consecutive 40-goal year with the Flames.
