Youth / News for the 18-and-under crowd
Dana Hills High School senior Shayna Rimel was in Washington this week as a delegate to the National Young Leaders Conference.
Rimel, 18, was one of 350 students from across the nation selected for the leadership development conference in the nation’s capitol. She was nominated by U.S. history teacher Bob Canary.
Before she left, Rimel said she was excited have the opportunity to visit Washington for the first time and meet with fellow high school students to discuss politics.
Rimel is a member of the school’s Associated Student Union and National Honor Society and participates in diving and tennis.
During the weeklong annual conference, delegates participate in debates and mock trials and visit the House of Representatives. Rimel was also scheduled to meet with California Sen. Barbara Boxer.
The conference, designed for high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit, is sponsored by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, a nonprofit education organization.
