A Glendora chiropractor accused of cheating insurance companies out of nearly $100,000 in disability benefits was sentenced Wednesday to 21 months in federal prison.

U.S. District Judge Laughlin Waters also ordered Thomas A. Hobson to pay $96,612 in restitution to the Mutual of Omaha, Minnesota Mutual Life and Allstate insurance companies.

Through his guilty plea to one count of mail fraud, Hobson admitted filing false medical claim forms with Allstate requesting payment for services never performed, Assistant U.S. Atty. Charles Kreindler said.

Hobson and his business partner, Manuel A. da Motta, created a fake accident and submitted fraudulent treatment notes and false certifications of disability to insurers, Kreindler said.

Da Motta also pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud. Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 24.
