Sears Plans Major N.Y. Expansion

Sears, Roebuck & Co. said it plans to open 110 stores in New York over the next four years, almost doubling its locations in the state and creating about 5,000 jobs. The retailer plans to open 10 full-line department stores and 100 free-standing specialty stores. The specialty shops include its Sears Hardware chain, the NTW Warehouse and Tire America tire and repair centers, and the Western Auto and Parts America auto-parts chains. Almost a third of those stores will be located in New York City. Hoffman Estates, Ill.-based Sears currently has 130 stores in the state, ranking New York No. 2 in sales volume behind California. Shares gained $1 to close at $54.75 on the New York Stock Exchange.
