Newhall Ranch Development

* Re “Growing in the Wrong Direction,” Feb. 9.

The article concerning the many negative aspects of the Newhall [Ranch] development only briefly touched water supply.

The rains this season will provide ample water for us this year and next. Then what? Drought is as normal as floods and recurring.

We are losing a percent of Owens River water. Arizona is using 100% of its allocation, which further cuts our supply of the excess. The Central Valley is claiming more state water, cutting down on that source. All that we can look for is less water, not more.

Now we have huge developments proposed in Santa Clarita, Ahmanson Ranch, Ballona Creek, etc., which plan to use water they don’t have. When the next drought comes, as it will, and we have to ration water, there will be less to go around and more houses to use it.

No more developers that use tax subsidies for a few to make fortunes--and for which we all pay.
